There has been much debate in recent years about the pro’s and con’s of so called “review websites”. To be sure, websites such a Yelp and Google+ have their use to assist consumers in policing the marketplace so they can get the most for their hard earned cash.

 

Unfortunately, this concept has morphed into scam and ripoff report websites. Many of these websites accept extraordinarily slanderous posts from customers, many without any basis in fact. For legal purposes, these sites are sure to include in their disclaimer that complaints can not be verified. It is also curious that in many cases, the company name and principal party are listed for all to see and plastered all throughout the web, yet the person making the complaint gets to remain anonymous.

 

This type of practice opens the door to the worst kind of irresponsible slander. Competitors could and sometimes do use this practice to gain advantage in the marketplace with total impunity.

 

Below is an excerpt of an actual post:

The post starts with, “I would like to warn people wanting to set up an offshore company or foundation about (Firm name, address and contact info with full Google map). “Following (Company owner’s full name) inadequate reply to my request for a full refund, as a customer unhappy with his services, and his startling lack of responsibility in demanding me to remove my report at my cost… etc.

 

In this particular instance, the firm actually did refund the non-refundable deposit to the customer. Upon further investigation on the Web, it was found that this was the only issue regarding a customer complaint for this firm. On the page, there is a very small link attached to the complaint that shows the issue had been amicably resolved, but, you really have to look to find it!

 

Still, if you Google the firm the first thing you see is this slanderous post, naming the company and full name of the owner. We’ve done further research and have discovered other instances on the web of people claiming to be scammed by these ripoff and scam websites with claims that they were approached to remove the postings for an exorbitant fee. That also occurred in the example above!

 

Look, I’m sure as a consumer there have been times where you’ve felt you’d been taken advantage of by some company.  An analogy of the reasoning could be stated as follows. Mrs. Smith feels that Mrs. Jones of Jones Bakery, owes her $100 for a transaction involving the sale of cupcakes. Mrs. Jones disagrees and there is a dispute. Mrs. Smith is unhappy with the result of the dispute and erects a billboard on Main Street warning to avoid Mrs. Jones bakery, and everyone should know that she is an unscrupulous business woman, along with other horrible unsubstantiated accusations. This billboard will remain there till the end of time. As it is online. Of course, Mr’s Smith never reveals her name!

 

Many other “scam websites” exist that excoriate these scam forums and ripoff sites for their irresponsible slander. The trouble with being a predator is that you’re never the only one and seldom the largest.

 

The bottom line is that there’s a point where the supposed cure becomes more fatal than the decease. Revenge may be sweet but there’s also another time-tested adage to consider, “What goes around, comes around”.
