OTL: Steelers Lose to Browns in the Snow, Fans Call for Tomlin’s Firing

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Thursday Night Football featured an AFC North battle for the second time in three weeks, as the Steelers traveled to Cleveland to take on the Browns. If you’re like me, you had very little hope that the hapless Browns would be able to do the Ravens a solid and pull off the upset. Steelers voodoo magic is just too strong right now.

The Flock, though, got just what we asked for, and in this season of giving thanks, we must extend our gratitude to Jameis Wintson, Nick Chubb, Kevin Stefanski, & Myles Garrett, who completed the 24-19 win by batting down a last-gasp hail mary attempt by Russell Wilson in a driving snowstorm.

Some highlights:

Garrett, who had some words for T.J. Watt in the days leading up to the game regarding the Steelers LB’s bellyaching about last year’s DPOY award, showed out, with three sacks in the first half. The biggest of those caused a fumble that his teammates recovered.

The Browns took a 10-3 lead into the half, but if you’re anything like me, you weren’t convinced they wouldn’t Brown things up.

Right on cue, to start the second half, they did what EVERYONE DOES against Pittsburgh and got careless with the football while driving to build on their lead.

The good news was, things were about to really get fun: SNOW FOOTBALL!

Did you know that the Browns are building a dome for their next home? Awful.

Pittsburgh didn’t capitalize on that turnover, as their offense entered their eighth consecutive quarter without scoring a touchdown. Instead, it was Jameis who found paydirt.

Did I mention I’m never convinced those black and yellow scumbags will lose? As soon as Cleveland went up 18-6, I put my money where my mouth is.

As expected, Pittsburgh marched right down the field to make it 18-13, then the Browns ran the Ravens’ favorite play when leading the Steelers late: “Don’t Block the EDGE on a Passing Play.” It wasn’t Watt, but Nick Herbig who got the Ole’ treatment.

Wilson then hit Calvin Austin for six to make it 19-18 Steelers. So after not scoring a TD for seven quarters, they scored two in less than two minutes.

Yanno, typical NFL nonsense.

(I could have cashed out by bet for a $35 win around now.)

With under five minutes left, Jameis pulled a Jameis, and this one looked all but over, with the Steelers once again inexplicably yanking victory from the jaws of defeat thanks to the aforementioned voodoo magic.

The Browns defense held though, and Pittsburgh’s punter shanked it, giving the Browns one last shot. They moved the ball down to the Pittsburgh 25, but in those conditions, a 43-yard field was hardly a given. At this point, a sequence unfolded that has the towel wavers calling for Mike Tomlin’s head this morning.

On 3rd-and-2, Cleveland committed a penalty for illegal touching of the ball when Winston tossed a pass while under duress from Patrick Queen. This could have been intentional grounding, but the Browns lucked out a bit. So Tomlin’s choice was to decline the penalty, making it 4th-and-2, or accept it for a 3rd-and-7. First he declined it, then accepted it, then called timeout…the whole thing was very Harbs-ian!

Making Cleveland decide to go for it on the 4th-and-2 – where a stop wins the game for Pittsburgh – or kick it 43 yards in those conditions, where even if it’s made, the Steelers have nearly two minutes and a timeout, along with one of the NFL’s best kickers, trailing by just two, seemed to have been the obvious choice.

Instead…

The Steelers escorted Chubb to the end zone (perhaps a play late) to try to save some clock after the touchdown, but now they needed one of their own. It wasn’t to be.

And with that, Cleveland notched their third win of the season, with two of them coming against the Ravens and Steelers. Football, man. Division games truly are different.

Now, let’s bask in the glow of rag wavers hating on Mike Tomlin.

So in the end, that crew got four whole days to celebrate another fluky win over the Ravens, and they’re now faced with stewing over a Browns loss for 10 days while a loud subsection of their fan base calls for the coach’s head.

I am finding plenty to be thankful for early this holiday season.

Now, let’s hope the Ravens can twist the knife even further with a win Monday night. For now, enjoy your stress-free weekend, Flock!
